The Cost of Freedom
By viewing previous wars, one can see that there is a common theme in history: our rights are limited during war. The purpose of these limitations is to make it easier for the government to engage in warfare, at the expense of the people. The Supreme Court decisions over such restrictions decided in favor of the government and extended it's powers.
- Schenck v United States- Prevent people from speaking against the government
- Korematsu v United States- Isolate groups of people and restrict their rights
- Supreme Court case in 1866 ruled that Lincoln overextended his powers
- In 1919, President Wilson pardoned 200 people convicted by the Sedition Act or Espionage Act
- Nixon's impeachment ended the
- Japanese internment ended in 1946 and Reagan repaid survivors in 1988
